Environmental Friendly Vehicle
December 2009 - When deciding which car to purchase Shelley considered the environment and decided to buy a Hybrid car. Everything about this car (eg. graphic displays of whether you are running on petrol or electric power or recharging batteries; large sat-nav/radio LCD; reversing cameras; park assist – yes it parks itself!) is very impressive. Also, part of the i-Tech package is a roof-mounted solar panel array that powers the air-con when the car is parked; Toyota reasons that if the car is nice and cool when you set off on your trek, the petrol engine will spend less time powering the air-con when you're on the move. Can you say that you get <4.5l per 100 km city driving? Shelley can!
Supporting community
WA Special Needs Childrens’ Party – in agreement with the Leukemia Foundation.
AITP has a history of supporting this worthwhile charity. Our support assists the charity to host a fun filled party (approx 4 weeks before Christmas) for children who have special needs and are suffering from life threatening illnesses. They get 3 ½ hours of entertainment, activities, party food and the highlight is a visit to the Toy Room to meet Santa and receive not one but several exciting gifts.
Bruce Rock Football Club
Bruce Rock is a wheatbelt community 250km east of Perth. Their football club is an affiliated member of the Eastern Districts Football Association which incorporates seven other clubs. Approx 15 of the players are located in the Perth metro area and will be undertaking training at locations such as the South Perth foreshore, Kings Park and a number of local beaches. While pre-season training commencing in early Jan 2010, group training (all forty members) will occur in Perth in Feb and March. AITP sponsored Bruce Rock Football Club’s pre-season training uniforms heading into the 2010 season.
Work Experience for youth and/or disadvantaged
Kelmscott Senior High School
AITP has a history of helping others – starting in 2004 with a return to work program for a young lady, badly injured in a motor vehicle accident. We provided her with a safe and supportive environment which resulted in her re-gaining confidence in being in a work environment. Since then we have hosted several school based trainees – assisting to develop their office skills and providing them with an opportunity to explore different occupations.
Woodman Point Odour Monitoring
Since Dec 2008, Shelley has been one of the team of 8 volunteers performing this community function. Appointed by Dr Ian Wallis, Shelley has filed monthly reports about any odours emissions detected – she has diligently performed her role as a Community Odour Sniffer.
This project is close to our hearts – Shelley’s brother Kim has been volunteering in Sabah for the past 6 years. He spends several months each year there – usually in the villages rather than in town – building schools, community centres and houses for those in need. Kim’s previous experience as a carpenter and builder are put to good use and he often has help from other volunteers from Australia.
In March 2010 Kim embarked on a massive project.
He will join with the people of Bingolon village in building a multi-purpose community Centre. They are also planning to establish a small Kindergarten and library in one section of the building. They will need to equip the room with teaching aids and train 2 of the local girls to run it. Donations of unwanted items and/or cash (tax deductible) are most welcome – contact the office if you can help in any way.
UPDATE: Please check the March & April 2011 Newsletter (above) for the latest on Kim's work in Sabah
